NAMM, Anaheim, API, and Rain

The 2013 NAMM Show was a huge success for API this year! From January 24th - 27th, we spent some time in what we thought was supposed to be sunny Anaheim, California with nearly 100,000 producers, engineers, and other music industry people, discovering the latest gear and reconnecting with the industry. Turns out it rained every day of the show, but we made the best of it. Look through the gallery to see some of the highlights.

This 1608 spent the day in a different type of studio; a photography studio! Thanks to some help from Lisa Masson Photography of Annapolis, MD, you can look for our newest 1608 ad in the Spring trade magazines.

Universal Audio Announces API 500 Series EQ Plug-In Collection for UAD Platform

Universal Audio has announced the impending release of the API 500 Series EQ Plug-In Collection for the UAD Powered Plug-Ins platform and Apollo High-Resolution Audio Interface. This API-endorsed, UA-developed collection features superior emulations of the legendary API 550A 3-Band and API 560 Graphic equalizers — two of the most popular and enduring audio equalizers ever made.

Designed by API's Saul Walker in the late 60's, the 550A and 560 modular EQs featured Walker's signature 2520 op-amp and proportional Q circuitry. For the API 500 Series EQ Plug-In Collection, UA's industry-leading circuit modeling team expertly captured the filter shapes, band interactions, and unique filter amplifier clipping behaviors of vintage API 550A and 560 units to exacting detail. The result is tight, low-frequency imaging that gives users that legendary API punch.

Additionally, the API 500 Series EQ Plug-In Collection includes presets from several famed engineers and producers, including Ross Hogarth (Van Halen, R.E.M., Ziggy Marley), Vance Powell (Jack White, Red Fang, The Dead Weather), Eli Janney (Jet, Ryan Adams, Wilco), Jeff Juliano (John Mayer, Shinedown, Train), Carl Glanville (U2, Billy Joel, Jason Mraz), and Darrell Thorp (Beck, Radiohead, Charlotte Gainsbourg).

"With the blessing and assistance of API and the hard work of our top-notch DSP team, we're proud to be releasing industry-leading emulations of the API 550A and 560 EQs," says CEO and Founder, Bill Putnam, Jr. "We're thrilled to be adding the iconic API sound to the UAD Powered Plug-Ins platform."

"We are very pleased to see the development of API plug-ins for the UAD platform," said Larry Droppa, API President. "The sonic integrity and audio performance of API products has always been our primary focus, and UA has demonstrated a proven track record with these same goals. We look forward to much success with this EQ collection and other API introductions to come."

API Rack Makes Experimusic

Award-winning sound designer Diego Stocco used his 500VPR rack to record his latest project. Using a combination of hand-built and modified instruments, he created an orchestra, wrote the music, and played every instrument. The impressive result can be heard here — http://www.behance.net/gallery/Custom-Built-Orchestra/5598107

His API rack is shown at the bottom of the linked page.

APiPad: Vintage Sound Meets Modern Technology

Vintage sound meets modern technology in an article featured in Sonic Scoop about a 48-channel API Discrete Console wired to an iPad for controls. The late-1980's API Discrete Console, which was acquired from Kooster McAllister of Record Plant Remote and has now found its home at Downtown Music Studios in New York City.

"They'd get the best of both worlds: a beautiful analog console combined with the flexibility of a digital routing system," says Edward Dias III, the lead software developer at SongTrust, who played a major part in this project.
